A calm reception before tooth extraction

Tooth extraction

Helsinki, Tikkurila, Tampere,
Hämeenlinna, Pori

Tooth extraction is one of the most common oral surgery procedures. When a tooth is infected, damaged, or prevents a balanced bite, extraction provides quick relief and prevents bigger problems. At Ville Männistö's practice, the extraction is performed painlessly and calmly, always taking your individual situation into account.

Why does a tooth need to be extracted?

A tooth is extracted when it can no longer be restored or is causing problems for your oral health. The most common reasons are advanced decay, infection, a crack, or crowding that interferes with orthodontic treatment. Removing a problematic tooth prevents pain, swelling, and more serious infections – and relief can be rapid.

When is tooth extraction necessary?

  • Tooth extraction may be the best – and only – solution if a tooth is decayed, damaged, or infected and saving the tooth is no longer possible.
  • The extraction is a painless procedure because it is performed under anesthesia. The removal takes from a few minutes to half an hour.
  • It is important to strictly follow the aftercare instructions.

Where is the treatment performed?

  • Oral and maxillofacial surgeon Ville Männistö sees patients in Helsinki, Tikkurila, Tampere, Hämeenlinna, and Pori.

How do I book an appointment?

Why choose oral and maxillofacial surgeon Ville Männistö's practice?

  • Ville is an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon who removes teeth safely and painlessly – even in demanding situations.
  • The procedure is quick: often the entire extraction is over in less than half an hour.
  • Ville also masters tooth replacement treatments, such as implants – you get comprehensive care from the same place.
  • He also specializes in immediate implant placement. In immediate implant placement, the tooth is removed and the implant is placed in the extraction socket during the same appointment.

"In immediate implant treatment, the patient comes to the office with their damaged tooth and leaves in about an hour with an implant and a temporary crown."

Specialist dentist Ville Männistö talks about tooth extraction

Specialist dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgery

I am a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery. I perform tooth extractions – both routine and surgical – every week, and it is important to me that every patient comes to treatment feeling safe and calm.

I also specialize in implants, including immediate implants. I perform procedures at my offices in Helsinki, Tikkurila, Tampere, Hämeenlinna, and Pori.

My goal is to make tooth extraction a quick, painless, and as worry-free experience as possible for the patient.

When is tooth extraction necessary?

The primary goal is always to save the tooth. However, sometimes the best treatment decision is to remove it. Most often, extraction is chosen when:

  • the tooth is chipped or cracked so badly that it can no longer be filled
  • the infection has progressed to the roots and root canal treatment is no longer effective
  • the tooth has grown crookedly or in a position that interferes with the bite
  • gum disease has destroyed the supporting tissues of the tooth
  • the tooth is in the way of orthodontic treatment

Sometimes I get asked: "Can tooth extraction still be avoided?" This will be clear after an X-ray and examination. It's always worth asking.

An infection or cracked root often no longer heals with treatment. Extraction often brings the quickest relief from pain.

How is a tooth extracted?

I perform tooth extractions in two different ways:

  • Conventional extraction: When the tooth has fully emerged and its roots are straight, the extraction is usually quick and does not require surgery.
  • Surgical extraction: If a tooth is partially under the gum, in a difficult position, or has strongly curved roots, surgery is required.

In both cases, I carefully anesthetize the treatment area. So there is no need to fear pain. Sensations are usually limited to feelings of pressure and pulling.

I often hear from patients after the procedure: 'It didn't hurt at all!'

After tooth extraction – what to expect?

Immediately after the extraction, a gauze pad is placed on the wound area, which is bitten for 30–45 minutes.

After this

  • First 1–2 days: swelling, tenderness, and bleeding may occur
  • Days 3–4: pain often subsides, swelling decreases
  • Within a week: most patients return to their normal daily life

At my office, you will receive clear aftercare instructions. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer them even after the procedure.

To ensure the wound heals as well as possible, follow these instructions:

  • Avoid eating and drinking for 3 hours after the extraction.
  • Eat cold and soft foods on the first day.
  • Do not rinse or gargle your mouth on the same day.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol for at least 24 hours – preferably longer.
  • Apply a cold compress to your cheek (15 minutes at a time).
  • Take painkillers regularly during the first few days.

Good aftercare speeds up recovery and prevents infection.

How much does a tooth extraction cost?

The price of a tooth extraction at a private clinic varies greatly. It can be around a hundred euros or rise to over 700 euros, depending on how complex the extraction is and where it is performed. Many people ask me what Kela (Social Insurance Institution of Finland) reimburses. Kela covers a small portion of the costs of private dental services. However, the majority remains to be paid by the patient.

I always go through the prices and options clearly before treatment, so that the patient can go home without any financial surprises. As a patient, you have the right to know what is happening and what it costs.

Complications – what can go wrong?

Most tooth extractions go smoothly, but it's good to be aware of the potential risks:

  • Alveolitis, or dry socket (usually around the 3rd day)
  • Post-operative bleeding – rarely heavy, but sometimes prolonged
  • Nerve damage – especially in connection with lower jaw extractions, very rare

If something doesn't feel normal, you should contact me – sooner rather than later.

Patient experiences – what does a tooth extraction feel like?

I have treated countless patients who came to the appointment feeling nervous. The most common feedback is this:

"It was unnecessary to be nervous – everything went very painlessly."

Or:

"Ville explained what he was doing all the time, and that was very reassuring."

Many also remember the calm and unhurried atmosphere. That is important to me.

Frequently asked questions

Does tooth extraction hurt?

No, it doesn't. The extraction is always performed under anesthesia. You may feel a little pressure, but no pain.

Can you eat after the extraction?

Yes, after a few hours, you can eat cold and soft foods.

When can I exercise?

Avoid light exercise for at least the following day. Heavy exertion is not recommended immediately.

How soon can I return to work?

Most often, you can return to work the next day. After a surgical extraction, 1–2 days of sick leave may be necessary.
