After Botox injections: what can and cannot be done?

After Botox injections, the most important instructions are:

  • Do not rub the injection site.
  • avoid lying down for about 4 hours
  • avoid strenuous exercise on the same day
  • Avoid saunas and alcohol during the first 24 hours.

These instructions will help ensure that the botulinum toxin acts correctly on the treated muscles and does not spread to adjacent muscles.

What happens after Botox injections?

In Botox treatment, botulinum toxin is injected into carefully selected facial muscles. The substance acts on the neuromuscular junction by blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

When the nerve does not transmit the contraction command to the muscle normally, muscle activity temporarily decreases. As a result, facial lines soften and the facial expression becomes calmer.

However, the effects of Botox are not immediate.

Typically:

  • the first effects are visible within 3–5 days
  • the final result will be visible in 10–14 days
  • the effect lasts for an average of 3–6 months

What should you not do after Botox injections?

Aftercare instructions following Botox injections

After Botox injections, it is recommended to avoid the following during the first few hours:

  • Do not rub the injection site.
  • avoid lying down for about 4 hours
  • avoid strenuous exercise on the same day
  • Avoid saunas and hot baths during the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment.

The purpose of these instructions is to ensure that botulinum toxin remains in the treated muscles and does not spread to adjacent muscles.

Surgeon's note

After Botox treatment, mild redness, swelling, or minor bruising may occur at the injection site. These reactions are usually related to the injection itself and not to the actual medication.

Most patients can return to their normal daily routine immediately after treatment.

How long should I be careful after Botox treatment?

The first 4–6 hours after Botox treatment are the most important. During this time, it is not recommended to massage the injection site or lie down. Heavy exercise and saunas should be avoided for the first 24 hours.

Most people can return to their normal daily routine immediately after treatment.

Can you go to the sauna after Botox?

It is generally recommended to avoid saunas for the first 24 hours after Botox treatment.

Intense heat increases blood circulation in the skin and muscles, which in theory may increase the risk of botulinum spreading. The following day, sauna bathing is usually completely safe.

Can you exercise after Botox?

Light exercise is usually permitted on the same day.

However, strenuous exercise should be avoided during the first 24 hours. This is because intense physical exertion increases blood circulation and may affect the distribution of the drug.

Can you drink alcohol after Botox?

After Botox treatment, it is recommended to avoid alcohol on the day of treatment. Alcohol can increase the risk of bruising at the injection site. The following day, alcohol consumption is generally safe.

Many people ask this question, especially in connection with aesthetic treatments. A small amount of alcohol does not usually affect the outcome of botulinum treatment, but it is often wise to exercise caution on the day of treatment.

When will the results of Botox become visible?

The effects of Botox usually begin within a few days of treatment.

  • 3–5 days – first effects
  • 10–14 days – final result

When can Botox treatment be repeated?

Botox treatment can usually be repeated after approximately 3–6 months.

Over time, nerve endings form new connections to the muscle, and muscle function gradually returns. Regular treatments can, in some cases, prolong the duration of the effect.

When should you contact your doctor after Botox injections?

Most of the after-effects are mild and temporary.

However, contact your healthcare professional if you experience any of the following:

  • intense pain
  • visual disturbances
  • difficulty swallowing
  • breathing difficulties
