Are you missing a tooth? A dental implant is a discreet and durable way to replace a missing tooth, allowing you to eat, smile, and speak effortlessly again. An implant functions like your own tooth and also looks natural. Often, my implant patients forget over time that it is not their own tooth.
I have performed thousands of implant procedures. A dental implant can restore not only your bite but also your self-confidence.
A dental implant is an artificial root that is placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. The implant is usually made of titanium. Titanium is a durable and strong material that is safe for the body. It attaches excellently to the jawbone.*) Once the implant is in place and fused with the bone, a custom-made dental crown is attached to it. The end result is a tooth that looks and feels natural and can withstand normal biting force. Unlike traditional bridges, an implant does not require grinding down adjacent teeth. An implant also helps prevent jawbone atrophy.
* Dental implants work through a process called osseointegration. Osseointegration refers to the process in which the cells of the jawbone attach directly to the titanium surface, causing the implant to essentially lock into the jawbone. This phenomenon was first discovered by a Swedish researcher, Professor Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, in the 1960s.
A dental implant may be a good solution if you are missing one or more teeth. When considering an implant, the most important thing is that the general health of your mouth and body is at a sufficiently good level. For example, carefully managed diabetes is not an obstacle to treatment. Untreated infection in the mouth or smoking, on the other hand, can increase the risks of treatment.
A dental implant is suitable for many patients, even those who initially have too little jawbone or whose jawbone quality has deteriorated. In such situations, a bone graft can often be performed, or bone-replacing material can be used. This makes implantation possible safely and durably. The treatment decision is always based on an individual assessment: the structure of the jawbone, the condition of the mucous membranes, and the patient's wishes.
Dental implants are not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age, whose jaw growth is not yet complete. On the other hand, there is no upper age limit if health and oral condition allow the treatment. During the consultation, we always assess the need for treatment and suitability in a calm and professional manner.
Dental implantation proceeds in stages. First, the condition of the mouth and jawbone is assessed with a clinical examination and X-rays. If necessary, a 3D scan is also performed to assess bone thickness and nerve location. Based on this information, an individual treatment plan is created.

The implant is placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia. The procedure is usually painless and typically takes less than an hour. The titanium artificial root is carefully installed in a planned location, after which it is allowed to fuse with the jawbone. The healing time varies individually. On average, healing takes 3–6 months.
After healing, an extension piece is attached to the implant, which acts as a structural support for the crown. Finally, a custom-made dental crown is attached, which completes the treatment. Each treatment is planned individually, and the course of the overall treatment may vary depending on the condition of the mouth and the patient's needs.
In some situations, I can place the implant immediately after tooth extraction. This is called an immediate implant. When conditions are favorable, unnecessary waiting is avoided and the patient does not have to go without teeth at all.
Safety and the durability of the end result determine the steps. Immediate implantation is a great option for many, while for others, treatment proceeds more smoothly with traditional methods.
Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, it is time to finalize the treatment. First, an extension piece is attached to the implant, which connects the artificial root and the visible dental crown. After that, precise impressions are taken, based on which a custom crown is made. The ceramic crown fits precisely in the mouth in terms of shape, color, and appearance: the bite is optimal, and the smile is beautiful.
The crown can be attached either with cement or with a screw. The method of attachment is chosen according to the situation and the location of the implant. The end result is a tooth that looks and feels natural. Installing the crown is usually a quick and painless procedure and does not require anesthesia.
At this stage of the treatment, the whole feels complete, and the patient can return to normal life without restrictions.

Recovery from a dental implant procedure usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks. The length of the recovery period depends on the extent of the procedure and your overall health. In the first few days, avoid physical strain, smoking, and alcohol, maintain good oral hygiene, and monitor the healing of the surgical area according to your dentist's instructions. With proper home care, swelling and pain will subside quickly.
You may experience fatigue and weakness after dental implant surgery or other oral surgery. This is normal.
Care for the wound according to the instructions given by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Take all prescribed medications on time. This will help prevent infection and promote healing.
Contact your dentist in the following situations:
Chlorhexidine-based Paroex solution may temporarily stain teeth, but the stains are easy to remove after the treatment period.
If the solution feels irritating, it can be diluted with water, or you can ask your dentist about alternatives.
Immediately after implant treatment, eating and drinking should be avoided for the period of time instructed by your dentist.
Once the anesthesia wears off, it is normal to feel pain or throbbing in the surgical area for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers from the pharmacy, such as ibuprofen-containing products, or medications prescribed by your dentist are suitable for pain relief.
Take the medicine according to the instructions and regularly. Pain management is easier in the first few days when you don't wait for the pain but prevent it with regular pain medication.
Swelling is typical after surgical procedures and is usually most severe the next day. Swelling can be reduced by placing a cold pack on the outside of the cheek for about half an hour at a time. Repeat the treatment 3–4 times a day during the first 24 hours.
Starting from the third day, heat treatment (e.g., a warm gel pack) can speed up the reduction of swelling and relieve muscle stiffness. Swelling may also be associated with slight difficulty in opening the mouth, which will ease as the symptoms subside.
A dental implant requires regular and thorough care, just like your natural teeth. The tissues surrounding the implant can become inflamed if cleaning is inadequate. Therefore, I recommend brushing twice a day and using an interdental brush or dental floss daily.
Any implant-supported dentures should be cleaned with a separate denture brush, and the implants underneath should be brushed with a regular toothbrush. A professional can help you find the right tools and methods to ensure adequate cleanliness. Simple and quick daily routines will keep the implant in good condition for a long time.
Regular check-ups and maintenance treatments are an important part of ensuring the longevity of the implant. Maintaining a healthy implant is a collaborative effort: home care and check-ups at the clinic support each other.
A dental implant feels the same as a natural tooth. It is firmly attached to the jawbone, and the crown is shaped so that biting and speech feel natural. Most patients cannot distinguish the implant from their own teeth in everyday activities.
Dental implant placement is always performed under anesthesia, so the procedure itself is generally painless. After the procedure, you may experience mild pain, swelling, or tenderness, but these typically subside within a few days. Pain relievers can be used to support recovery if needed.
The total duration of treatment is usually 3–6 months. In the fastest cases, the implant can be placed immediately after tooth extraction – this is called an immediate implant. The duration of treatment is affected by factors such as bone quantity, possible bone grafting, and individual healing rate.
With good care, a dental implant can last a lifetime. Regular oral hygiene and dental check-ups ensure that the health of the implant and gums remains good in the long term.
The price of a dental implant varies from clinic to clinic and depending on individual treatment needs. For example, at E-Hammas in Helsinki, prices start at around 2600 euros, at Hammasklinikka Kruunu in Tampere the starting price is €2900, at IsoKarhun Hammas in Pori €2257, and at Ritariklinikka in Hämeenlinna €2250.
The final cost is determined by the procedures performed, any additional treatments (e.g., bone graft), and the materials used. During a consultation, you will receive an accurate estimate of the treatment package that is right for your situation.
Kela reimburses part of the cost of a dental implant under certain conditions. In 2025, the reimbursement for the placement of the first implant is €57. If several implants are placed during the same visit, the following implants are reimbursed at €42 per implant.
Kela does not reimburse the crown itself, but, for example, a possible implant exposure surgery may be a reimbursable procedure (€19). It is good to note that the Kela reimbursement covers only a small part of the total costs, and the decision on treatment is most often made based on health and quality of life.
All surgical procedures involve risks, and dental implants are no exception. Common concerns include swelling, pain, and delayed bone healing. In most cases, these symptoms are mild and manageable with home care and, if necessary, pain medication. Infections are rare, but they are usually treatable quickly.
Implant rejection is extremely rare. However, sometimes the implant does not integrate as expected, in which case it can be removed and replaced with a new one. Treatment is always planned individually. During the consultation, we will discuss possible risks in peace beforehand. Years of experience help to identify situations where an alternative solution may be better.
Over the years, I have seen thousands of implant treatments and learned to recognize situations where a detail may require special attention. That's why we will go through the possible risks and treatment path options in peace at the appointment. My goal is for you to feel safe at every stage.
The price of a dental implant consists of several different factors, which are good to examine before making a treatment decision. The total costs of the procedure are affected by, among other things:
I have personally performed thousands of dental implant procedures. When implant treatment is carefully planned and carried out with high-quality materials, it is a long-term solution that is not only durable but also cost-effective overall.
Experience is the foundation of quality. Quantity does not replace quality, of course, but achieving quality requires performing tens and hundreds of implant procedures, as I myself have done.
The most common implant material is titanium – it is very durable but expensive to manufacture. In my work, I only use the highest quality Nobel implants on the market.
Technique also affects the price. For example, I use 3D imaging and navigation assistance when they provide added benefits to safety and the final result.
The overall quality of the implant treatment is what matters. If you save in the wrong place – at the expense of materials or the professional's expertise – the result can be additional treatments, repairs, or even redoing the treatment. A properly done implantation from the beginning is always the most cost-effective and safest option.
The exact price of a dental implant is always determined in a consultation, where I will assess your situation and plan an individual treatment.
Prices include a high-quality implant, surgery, a ceramic crown, and treatment planning. Possible additional procedures, such as bone grafts, may increase the price. We will always discuss these clearly before starting treatment.
